Disabled Members

Disabled people experience discrimination at work. UNISON challenges discriminatory actions and campaigns for a fair deal for disabled members.

UNISON supports the Social Model of Disability. We believe it is the way society organises that creates barriers to inclusion and prevents disabled people from taking an equal part in life. As a union we campaign on important issues such as:

Inaccessible workplaces
Information systems that don't include disabled people's access needs
Negative attitudes and prejudices from employers

UNISON's priorities on disability are led by the union's own disabled members. Our union is committed to taking on the issues from those who know them best.

In NTW Health Branch

Ronnie Dunn, our Equality Rep and disabled member tells us how he joined and what he has achieved so far within the Branch:

'My name is Ronnie Dunn I am a disabled member and activist in Unison NTW Health Branch. I joined in 1993 from COHSE the health union of which I was Branch Secretary.
Since 1993 Unison has valued its disabled members also campaigning on their behalf on many themes such as “Beyond the Barriers” “Access for All” to name but two. Since 1993 with the creation of the Disabled Members Self Organising Group disabled members have had an opportunity to play a greater role in their branch/region it also leads to networking possibilities.
As a Unison member I have held several positions including Branch Treasurer Branch Equality Officer and the newly created role Equality Rep.For several years now I have been privileged to have attended the Disabled Members Conference as delegate I have attended many training courses over the years that have addressed Disability Issues and Discrimination made friends and lots of contacts' Ronni Dunn, Equality Rep, NTW Health Branch
